History

Rao Jodha, the Rathore Rajput King, became the 15th Rathore ruler. Jodha decided to move his capital to a safer location of the city Jodhpur after one year of his accession to the throne. He made this decision as the one-thousand-year-old fort named Mandore was no longer considered to render enough security. Rao Jadha laid the foundation of the Mehrangarh fort with the aid of Rao Nara, his Diwan in 1459 on a rocky hill- Bhaurcheeria, the mountain of birds, which was 9km to the south of Mandore fort. To build the fort, he had to force the hill’s sole human occupant called Cheeria Nathji, the lord of birds, to leave the place. Angered on this, he cursed Rao Jadha saying that his fort will always suffer from the water scarcity. Then, Rao Jadha built a separate home for him in the premises of the fort, but until today, the fort faces draught every 3 to 4 years.

For the prosperity of the fort, Rao Jadha called Karni Mata of Deshnok, a powerful female warrior sage to lay the foundation stone and bless it. Unlike other Rajput forts, this fort remains in the hands of the royal family. The fort has unique architecture executed from different periods up to the 20th century.
